PUBLIC NOTICE OF HEARING REGARDING ENROLLMENT OF NONRESIDENT STUDENTS’ POLICY
PUBLIC NOTICE
Notice is hereby given pursuant to K.S.A. 72-3126, of a public hearing to be held on the 13th day of November, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at Columbus Board of Education Office (802 South High School Avenue, Columbus, Kansas) regarding the Unified School District No. 493, Cherokee County, Kansas proposed policy to determine the number of nonresident students that the school district has the capacity to accept in each grade level for each school of the school district pursuant to K.S.A. 72-3123, and amendments thereto, including clearly specifying the reasons that the board may use to deny continued enrollment of a nonresident student who is not in good standing.
A representative of the board shall present the board’s proposal for the policy, and the board shall hear testimony regarding the proposed policy.
[NOTE: This notice must be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the school district once a week for two consecutive weeks on the same day of each week and shall be posted on the school district’s website. K.S.A. 72-3126]

Here at USD 493, We use Google email, apps and services. Due to a change in Google’s privacy policy, we’re required to obtain parental consent to continue using third-party apps that require a student to login. The deadline for this is October 23rd, 2023.
To give consent for your student to continue using third-party apps for educational purposes, please login to your PowerSchool Parent Portal, go to the forms button in the left column to review and complete the form named Columbus USD 493 Third-Party App Parental Consent located under the general tab. If consent is not given by October 23rd, we will have to disable your student’s Google account until we obtain consent to continue using it. If you need assistance with your PowerSchool Parent Portal account, please contact your child’s school office. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding!

The November 1st scholarship application deadline is quickly approaching, and we want you to be ready! Many schools (including vo-tech and state schools like PSU) use the FAFSA and online applications to award multiple lesser-known scholarships, many of which do not require a low income or high GPA and ACT scores to qualify. In fact, researchers claim that *a regular high school student may have the qualifications for as many as 50 to 100 scholarships," and one secret to earning more scholarship money is "getting your application materials ready for on-the-spot submission."
I am Janie Jarrett, a lifelong Columbus girl and CUHS, PSU & Mizzou graduate. My administrative background, where I read hundreds of applications for employment, coupled with my expertise in writing, and my own success in navigating college funding sources, qualifies me to coach seniors toward creating more competitive applications. In eight years of college, I was able to secure scholarship money that paid my tuition and provided an additional living stipend. In the upcoming workshop, I will help students create a toolbox with which to present themselves in the best possible light in the application process.

Today was such a fun day. I got to visit the littles at Park school this morning at 7:15 for breakfast. They have so much energy early in the morning.
Then I had lunch at Highland and enjoyed visiting with some really cool kids.

It was brought to my attention by two students at Highland that we should be celebrating Taco Tuesday by having taco's on Tuesdays and not another day of the week so there will be a menu change on Sept 25 & 26th. Thank you ladies for the reminder.

The game scheduled with Parsons today has been cancelled because of their field being too wet and unplayable. Looking for a date to reschedule.
Lady Titan Golf played an 18 hole tournament at Briarbrook, hosted by Carl Junction. The following schools were there: Lamar, Carthage, Joplin, Republic, Carl Junction, Pittsburg, and Webb City. Missouri only gives out the top two teams, but your Lady Titans placed 3rd. Missouri also only hands out the top 5 individual places. Mallory Thompson placed 2nd overall, Reese Grundy tied for 4th place. The Lady Titans were not intimidated playing the bigger schools at all. They hung in there and played very well.
Jr. High fall sports photos will be Wednesday, September 13th. Kids will be called out at 2:15 and we will start pictures then. They will still practice after photos.
Lady Titans Golf placed 3rd as a team at Girard on Thursday. Individually, Mallory Thompson tied for first but lost the tie breaker and finished in second. Reese Grundy placed third. Great job, ladies!

After School Programing is priority to students in need of academic supports. We have students Monday-Thursday and transportation is not provided.

The high school soccer match at Coffeyville has been canceled because of Coffeyville not having enough JV players. It is tentatively rescheduled for 10/12 at Coffeyville now.
