Head coaches Ross Davis of Baxter Springs, Sam Hardy of Oswego, and Luke Henke of Columbus brought teams together as part of week 5 of the inaugural KSHSAA esports season.
We ran side-by-side competitions. Nintendo's Super Smash Bros was a best of 5 match between Columbus and Oswego. Columbus won the first round, Oswego the next two, and then Columbus the 4th. The last round saw each competitor matching life for life, damage for damage. With both characters in the red, it all came down to who could land the final blow. Canaan Rider hit that final blow to make the 3rd win behind Trandon Ayala's other two to finalize Columbus' win over Oswego.
While that match was running, Psionic's Rocket League - think soccer with cars - was the perfect round robin setup. Columbus took Oswego in the first round. Baxter Springs out matched Oswego in the 2nd round. Columbus and Baxter Springs had a heated head to head that eventually went to Baxter.
The last match of the evening was a 4 course race in Nintendo's Mario Kart. The chaos filled maps saw Oswego shining in a clear win over Columbus.
What is esports?
It's electronic competitions pitting skill vs skill within video games. It's nearing $6 billion dollars as a market. More people watch esports than all traditional sports combined. We are excited to bring accountability, skill development, personal development, leadership, communication, and entrepreneurship to our students through esports.
