My name is Brian Smith, and I am the superintendent of schools. I grew up on a farm in the Columbus School District, and graduated from Columbus Unified High School in 1981. I attended Pittsburg State University after high school, and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in English. While teaching English, I obtained a Masters in School Counseling from Emporia State University. I worked as a school counselor for six years after graduating with my degree. During this time, I obtained a second Masters in School Leadership. I served as a high school principal at Liberal High School in Liberal, Missouri before taking the principal position at Galena High School in Galena, Kansas. After two years as high school principal in Galena, I was promoted to superintendent of schools and served in that position for 14 years. I was granted a Doctorate of Education from the University of Kansas in 2005. I was excited for the opportunity to return to my hometown and serve as superintendent in Columbus. I have enjoyed my time back home immensely, and it is my mission to provide the students of the Columbus School District a quality education.
