Another month has come and gone....and now it's February! We continue to work hard everyday in our classroom and we continue to make good progress!
Keep practicing those weekly spelling and vocabulary words every night. So proud of how well we are all doing!
In Phonics, we will be finishing up our unit on Blends and Digraphs, and the letter Y as a vowel (long e and long i). Spelling words will coincide with these pages in our Phonics book and we will use them in Journal time as well.
Math has us finishing up our unit on Money. Money is always a hard subject. Please practice with your child at home recognition of each coin, the value of each coin, and making small amounts of change with different sets of coins. The hardest part of counting money is counting on from quarters, dimes, and nickels, so don't knock yourself in the head if this is something that is a bit hard for your child! We are doing the best we can, and it will come to them the older they get! :-) The next chapter will be on Fact Families. This will be another good time to practice addition and subtraction facts at home. We use flash cards with partners in class and try to practice our "mental math" skills.
We continue to write complete sentences in our Journals and use Spelling words to help us do this. Stress to them at home, if you find them writing, about the important parts of sentences (capital letters, finger spaces, end marks, and that it makes sense). I am trying to have them incorporate more describing words and being creative with their sentences in class. Inventive Spelling is also a great thing to see them using! :-) I'm not worried about bigger words being spelled correctly!
We will keep reading stories from our Readers every Wednesday and are doing a great job with the Comprehension Questions worksheets they do on Thursday morning! I will be teaching them more about characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, problem and solution for these stories as the month goes on. We will be looking at a Story Map and filling in these important parts to stories.
Tuesday, February 14, will be our classroom Valentine's Day Party!! If your child would like to make a Valentine's box at home to collect Valentine's from their classmates, you may do so and send it to school on Monday, February 13, I will be sending home a list of the student's names for your child to address Valentines to his/her classmates. Classroom Treaters that day are Ethan A. and Kristine N.
