Literature Circles
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT NEEDED!
by Kenda Myers
Community involvement is an important part of the Columbus High School. Each year the CUHS Library picks an area that the community can become involved with to promote student achievement and student success. This year the target is LITERATURE CIRCLES. A Literature Circle is...............
A set of 10-15 books that a teacher can use in any classroom. They can be used in math, science, reading. literature, and any sports. The circles are a wonderful way to get students interested in reading. Literature circles are student centered groups that meet and discuss characters, plot, setting etc. of a particular set of books. Studies have proven that students involved in these circles score higher in reading, language arts, and writing tests. In today's fast paced world it is imperative that children take the time to read a book and use their imagination to connect to the characters, plot and setting.
Columbus High School is dedicated to serving the needs of their students. A Literature Circle is one more way that they are trying to improve upon the needs of their students. With Annual Yearly Progress(AYP) scores above the standard, CUHS is striving to keep the students AYP scores above average again this year. Literature Circles is a great way to help with this important goal.
As a community member you can help contribute to this student learning. Literature Circles are approximately $200.00 per circle. If you would like to purchase a circle, or a partial circle your name will be placed in the books so that the students are aware that you are an important part of their success. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IS SO IMPORTANT! Your support shows that reading is important and something that the student will use all of their lives.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I would be happy to discuss how to participate in the Literature Circles at any level.
