Childhood Development/Parenting

Brief Course Outline

by Madeline Gurney

Child Development and Parenting class covers the life of a child from gestation to age 13.  While discussing the development of the child in the 5 areas of physical, intellect, social, emotional, and moral development, the course covers parenting practices that promote healthy development of the child.

The class consists of lecture/notes, demonstrations, guest speakers, possible field trips, and projects.

Some of the projects require parent permission such as the empathy belly/pregnancy simiulator and the Real Care babies.  In the spring the students will have a preschool opportunity.  It will be different than in the past but they will still receive this opportunity.

The empathy belly is a 34# weighted belly that the students wear during class.  Due to the weight, we must have permission from parents to insure no injury to the students due to pre existing conditions such as back injuries etc.

The Real Care babies are simulated babies that require proper care, changing, feeding, cuddling, holding, rocking etc.  The students will be taking the babies home for a period of days.  These babies cost $800 dollars and we must have parents sign contracts to assume responsibility for replacement incase of any damage resulting from the care session.
