Tyler Fleming State Player of Week

State Player of the Week

by Bob Hovey

HSP has committed to bringing back a regular online feature of the web site with the Performance of the Week every Wednesday evening.

This year's performance of the week will be a premier listing on the sports page as we move more toward giving our subscribers quality information on Kansas athletes.

The Performance of the Week, is what you, the reading fans have come up with to honor not heroes, but high school youngsters who sacrifice time, effort, and sweat in order each week to compete in something they love.

Here's how it works.

Sometime before Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., you the fan will nominate those you feel have over achieved or just plain dominated the past week.

Keep in mind, that those involved in blowouts against overmatched competition will stand very little chance of making the top performance, we are looking more for the kids who win the close ones and still put up the numbers.

This is not limited to just a football POW, but all fall high school sports.

We eagerly look forward to this year's selections, with a fantastic crop of high school football seniors, not to mention some of the other sports involved this fall, the talent level in the state of Kansas has risen to an all time high and is expected to move on. You the fan, coach, parent, can get involved here by nominating for the player of the week, sending in short summaries on your games for posting, or post yourself in the message boards.

Also, if you know of those who would make the pow or 1,000 yard lists, please let us know about them as tracking down all these athletes. Here's to a great season.

Forms to nominate are posted in the volleyball, football, and fall sports message boards

This week's award is shared between two players. One awarded for his performance on the offensive side of the ball, and the other the defensive side.

On the offensive side of the ball, Columbus wide receiver Tyler Fleming broke Harrison Hill's record for the most number of receiving yards in a football game, catching eight passes for a total of 285 yards and four touchdowns. His yardage in receptions also led the nation last week, and thanks to his quarterback, Corbin Stanley who is already a member of the 1,000 yard club, Tyler has been nominated for Rivals.com national POW honors.
